"The Literature of Running" in "World Literature Today"
"Filling the Unforgiving Minute: the Literature of Running" by Roger Robinson was commissioned by World Literature Today, and is published in the March-April issue. WLT is a major bimonthly American magazine of international literature and culture (www.worldliteraturetoday.com). Roger's new essay discusses a selection of running literature from 2,700BC to twenty-first century American running books, with much of the material fresh since his seminal book, Running in Literature. An introduction covers early cultures, especially Homer, followed by sections on "saintliness," "sexiness," "freedom," and "engagement with life." A final section summarizes very recent running books. The publication perfectly represents Roger's two aspirations - to show that running can be the subject of great writing, and to make scholarly literary research accessible and entertaining for a broader readership.
