In 1889, an ex-Prime Minister of New Zealand wrote an extraordinary prophetic novel. He imagined a future when women hold all senior political positions, travel is by air, and communication is by something very like email or texting ("the noiseless telegraph"). And that's not all. Social welfare, city architecture, global commerce, tourism, and medical science are all astonishingly as we now know them.
New Zealand's annual award for science fiction is called the Vogel. The novel's Bond-like action hero, revolutionary in 1889, can also be seen as a landmark in the representation of Jewishness.
It is a key text in the history of the women's movement. In Parliament, Vogel introduced the bill to make New Zealand the first nation to give women the vote. With a woman Prime Minister, the year 2000 seemed a good time to revive an important book that had not been republished since 1889.
